Picked up this drive on sale from Fry's Electronics for $40. Brought it home, installed it to the PS2 and fired up HDLoader 0.8b from the memory card. It detected the drive and proceeded to format. I installed a game, the game ran fine.
I then turned the PS2 off and turned it back on, and HDLoader froze at the splash screen. I tried multiple versions and they all froze as well. Next, I hooked the HD up to my PC and fired up WINHIIP 1.7.6. It found the PS2 hard drive and said that there were errors, so I did a scan/repair. Then I loaded a few more images on to the drive. I put the drive back in the PS2 and it worked great. However, the next time I turned the PS2 on, it froze at the splash screen.
I tried scanning the drive again in WINHIIP but it detected no errors. So, again, I put the drive back in the PS2 and it kept on freezing at the splash screen in multiple versions of HDLoader. Frustrated, I tried more and more, reformatting, trying 48bit, etc, and finally it detected it in the PS2. But once again, as soon as I turn off the PS2 and turn it back on, it would freeze.
Now it wont detect the drive at all. As this is the first submission of this drive model, it seems that the drive works but very, VERY, inconsistently. Perhaps it's my older V4 fat PS2. Or maybe it's my network adapter (date code: 2C). I tried plugging in a really old 20GB Maxtor and it loads and is detected by all versions of HDLoader on my memory card every single time. So I must assume that this drive (Maxtor L01V160) is simply not compatible.
I'm going to drive back in to Fry's right now and exchange it and grab a 300GB Maxtor L01Y300 and see if that works. I'll update here. |

Update:
I returned the Maxtor 160GB L01V160 to Fry's and exchanged it and paid the difference for the Maxtor 300GB L01Y300. It works great. So it seems that my network adapter was not to blame, nor was my older model V4 PS2 -- apparently, the Maxtor L01V160 160GB model simply is not compatible with HDLoader. |

Do you know if it will work on a v10 PS2? |

Similiar to original posters issue, I have v7 ps2 softmod with launchelf, and would frequently freeze at the hdloader splash screen from a cold boot.
A technique that works for me is to boot the ps2 up in launchelf and let the system warm up for a good minute before starting hdloader. I know its a slight pain but I have never had the splash screen freeze again if i let the ps2 sit a while before loading hdloader.
I have not encountered the other problems the op mentioned. |
